The long awaited rumor may finally come to fruition this fall when Apple will allow third-party apps on the Apple TV. This is big news not only for the consumer, but also the app developers and the video game market...
To put it in perspective... With third party apps, the $99 Apple TV will offer everything it does already WITH the ability to play video games at 1080p resolution. And with the expected price of $10 per game... This blows the competition out of the water with consoles running $200+ with games roughly at $50 a piece.
The entire premise is that Apple’s entry in to the games console market is incredibly simple. Simply open up the ability to have third party apps on the Apple TV, take a 30% like it does now with iTunes/App Store and developers will jump at the opportunity.
One of the founders of XBox stated: "Apple, if it chooses to do so, will simply kill Playstation, Wii-U and xBox by introducing an open 30%-cut app/game ecosystem for Apple-TV. I already make a lot of money on iOS – I will be the first to write apps for Apple-TV when I can, and I know I’ll make money."
Of course along with the gaming apps comes all the other types of apps that we know from the App Store (i.e. Weather Apps, News Apps, Health Apps... You get the idea)
