Volkswagen Prototype gets 261 MPG

You gotta hand it to good 'ol German engineering...
At the Qatar Motor Show, Volkswagen unveiled the VW L1 vehicle that gets an astonishing 261 mpg...! Although currently a prototype, the L1 has an ultra-effecient diesel engine along with an electric motor sucking juice from a lithium-ion battery.
The engine isn't the only thing making this ride eco-friendly, it's also in the weight. Weighing in at just 838 lbs., the L1's body cuts back on the metal and is instead made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastics, which in turn reduces fuel consumption...
The concept car’s two-cylinder diesel engine is capable of working in two modes: eco and sport. While in the eco mode, the car’s engine will run at 27 hp/4,000 rpm, however in the sport mode this figure increases to 39 hp. While in this mode, the car will be able to reach a top speed of about 160 km/h, or 99 miles per hour.
If all goes well and the Earth doesn't blow up next year, we should be seeing the L1 hit production in 2013 with the expected price tag of $29,500.... keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for the News Tip Charlie K.
