I'm sure we have all been there... stopped at a red light with no other cars in sight...
Perhaps Stefan Lammer and Dirk Helbing have a solution with an idea to make 'smarter traffic lights'. Currently traffic lights in the US have different ways of regulating traffic light time, such as cameras tracking oncoming traffic and sensors measuring the weight in the road. These new 'smart traffic lights' however uses sensors that figure out the expected number of oncoming traffic and then figuring the length in time each side would need to remain on red. This new system could reduce the wait time by 30 percent...!
As of now these smart lights are only in a testing phase right now, but in time and with the proper funding, we could see these lights at the next intersection.
